No. 4 Gaston College sets offensive records in Tuesday afternoon victory

No. 4 Gaston College sets all sorts of offensive records in Tuesday afternoon's 28-6, 7-inning win at Rockingham Community College.

The Rhinos improved to 39-3 overall after erupting for a school-record 17-run rally in the top of the seventh inning to close out the non-conference victory.

"We obviously swung the bats really well," said Doty, whose offense had 18 hits and drew 11 walks and four hit batters. "We were patient and when they put it in the strike zone, we got good swings."

In addition to the record 17-run inning, Gaston College tied the record for most home runs in a game with six and for the largest margin of victory at 22.

The 28 runs is second in school history and three runs shy of the record 31 set at USC Union in a 31-11, 5-inning victory over April 6, 2024 in the opener of a doubleheader.

The 17-run inning is the 11th double figure in school history and third this season.

The 22-run victory ties three previous wins - 24-2 at Guilford Tech (March 22, 2023), 23-1 vs. USC Union (April 7, 2023 opener of doubleheader) and 22-0 vs. Charlotte Pro Stock Royals (Feb. 16, 2025 nightcap of doubleheader).

And the six home runs had previously been hit on Feb. 17, 2023 at Catawba Valley Community College and in the nightcap of a doubleheader against Patrick & Henry earlier this season (Jan. 23).

Logan Ponnett (3 hits, double, home run, 5 RBIs), Holden Cooper (3 hits, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs), Kandan Zollo (3 hits), Joeyn Nicholson (2 hits, home run, 2 RBIs), Caden Davidson (2 hits, double, home run, 5 RBIs) and Chris Hendrickson (2 hits, home run, 3 RBis) led the Gaston College offense on Tuesday.

Chase Ghantt, one of five pitchers used by the Rhinos, picked up the win with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts.

"I feel good for him," Doty said of Ghantt, a 2024 North Gaston high graduate. "He threw the ball really well today."

The Rhinos return home for a three-game weekend Region 10 home series - a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader and 1 p.m single game against USC Union at Gastonia's Sims Legion Park.
